Crash alert: Driver charged in fatal Derry crash that killed passenger

DERRY, NH – A man has been charged with a battery of crimes stemming from a fatal collision that occurred while he was driving drunk last Wednesday.

The New Hampshire Union Leader reports that 20-year-old Quincy, MA resident Matthew Pittman has been charged with negligent homicide, aggravated driving while intoxicated and operating without a valid license.

Pittman was at the wheel of a southbound 2011 Volkswagen Golf when he lost control of the vehicle at 115 Windham Road at about 4 p.m., left the roadway, and slammed into a group of rocks and trees. He and his 19-year-old passenger, Derry resident Molly Rockwell, were initially taken to Parkland Medical Center, but Rockwell’s condition worsened and she was flown to Women’s Hospital in Boston, where she died.

Police say Pittman admitted to consuming several shots and a beer prior to the collision. He alleges that Rockwell had initially been the driver, but had pulled over and asked him to take the wheel as she had also been drinking.

Pittman is currently being held in Rockingham County jail.
