Crash alert: Man facing DUI charges after UTV crash that killed his wife, best friend

CANDIA, NH – A man is facing charges after allegedly driving drunk and causing a UTV crash in Candia on Sunday that claimed the lives of his wife and best friend, according to WMUR.

The collision happened on Chester Road at about 7:30 p.m. as 48-year-old Candia man James Shankle was operating a UTV that was also carrying his wife, Renee Shankle, and his best friend, Goffstown resident Alan Juza.

James Shankle, who reportedly admitted to drinking at least eight beers before the crash, was traveling at a speed of around 40-50 mph before the UTV crashed into a tree. Authorities believe he did not brake before impact.

Renee Shankle and Juza were pronounced dead after the collision.

A steering wheel malfunction may also have played a role in the accident.

James Shankle is facing two counts of negligent homicide while under the influence in connection with the crash. More charges may be pending.
