DERRY, NH – A 12-year-old boy suffered serious injuries last week when a go-cart rolled over in a Derry backyard and trapped him and another child inside the vehicle, according to a report by the New Hampshire Union Leader.
The accident happened on a private track at about 3 p.m. Thursday when one of the boys attempted to make a turn. The vehicle rolled over onto its side, trapping him and another 12-year-old boy in the wreckage.
The boys, both from Derry, were extracted from the crash by emergency personnel after a worried neighbor called 911.
The driver was taken to the hospital in Manchester for the treatment of serious wounds. The other boy was not reported as injured.
Both children were wearing safety gear at the time of the collision.
Authorities believe that the driver’s young age and inexperience, combined with a high rate of speed, caused the accident.
According to the report, passengers are not allowed in an off-road vehicle with an underaged driver.
While off-road vehicles can be fun for the whole family, they can also be dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken.
