Crash Alert: 5-Year-Old Hospitalized After Alleged Drunk Driver Crashes Into House

SALEM, NH – A 5-year-old girl was severely injured after a doctor from Massachusetts suspected of being under the influence allegedly crashed into a home in Salem this weekend.

According to the New Hampshire Union Leader, the collision occurred at a home on Silver Brook Road at about 2 p.m. Saturday.

37-year-old Scott Dowd, who is affiliated with a practice in North Andover, Mass., and hospitals in Lawrence, Mass., and Methuen, Mass., was allegedly driving a 2019 Acura RDX while under the influence. His vehicle ran off the side of the road and crashed into multiple trees and bushes before it collided with the side of a home.

Dowd was trapped within the wreckage before being rescued through the windshield. He was then taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment and has since been released.

A 5-year-old girl inside the home was airlifted to the hospital for emergency surgery. She has since been released and is recovering at home.

Authorities believe Dowd may also have been speeding at the time of the crash.

He is facing multiple charges in connection with the crash, including first-degree assault of a child leading to serious injury, aggravated DUI leading to serious injury, and three charges of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon.

His arraignment will take place later at Rockingham Superior Court.

According to Lawrence General Hospital, one of the hospitals Dowd is affiliated with, he will not be allowed to practice at the hospital while the incident is under investigation.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and are awaiting the results of multiple forensic tests.

"In the late summer of 2015, I had the misfortune of falling in a public place of business through no fault of my own. I was seriously injured, both my legs, which resulted in almost 6 months of modified bed rest and convalescing. Needless to say, I was completely overwhelmed with doctors; specialists; physical therapists and many other wonderful people. As if this was not daunting enough, it was told to me, in this time of utter chaos, I needed to engage an attorney. I have never had to hire an attorney..." R.W.W.
