Speeding Accidents in New Hampshire
Every year, speeding accidents claim the lives of thousands of people throughout the nation, although this number has been falling steadily with the addition of new safety features in automobiles along with the improvement of existing features. Nevertheless, the percentage of traffic fatalities in which speeding was a factor has remained consistent at just under one-third, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
According to the New Hampshire Highway Safety Annual Report 2015, the percentage of auto accident fatalities in which speeding was a factor was generally higher – and in some cases significantly higher – than the national average between 2010 and 2014:
2010: 128 auto accident fatalities, of which 62 were speed-related (48 percent)
2011: 90 fatalities, 39 speed related (43 percent)
2012: 108 fatalities, 39 speed related (36 percent)
2013: 135 fatalities, 66 speed related (49 percent)
2014: 95 fatalities, 47 speed related (49 percent)
Tellingly, in 2011 and 2012 – the years that speed-related fatalities were at their lowest numbers – there were more speeding citations issued in New Hampshire than in 2010, 2013, or 2014. In 2011, 8,824 citations were issued; in 2012, 7,308 citations were issued. By contrast, in 2013, 6,805 citations were issued, while in 2014, only 4,092 citations were issued.
