Most Dangerous Roads in Manchester, New Hampshire

According to New Hampshire’s Department of Transportation Highway Safety Improvement Program, of the 10 most dangerous intersections in Granite State, two are located in Manchester: Bridge & Beech Streets and Beech Street & Cilley Road.

Beech Street & Cilley Road has seen over 20 accidents and 23 injuries over a four-year period. One reason this area is so dangerous is the heavy traffic due to nearby attractions like Massabesic Lake and McIntyre Ski Resort.

The intersection also has been known to have poor road conditions, it’s close to on-ramps, and drivers often speed on this roadway. These factors combine to make it one of the most dangerous intersections in New Hampshire. Beech Street & Bridge Street, the other most dangerous intersection, is less than two miles north and has many of the same issues that make it dangerous.

ASecureLife, a website that has been researching and reviewing the security industry since 2008, analyzed fatal crashes from May through September for the years 2015 through 2017 to find out which roads are the most dangerous during the summer months, the peak time for travel.

Using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, the site found that I-93 was the deadliest highway in New Hampshire. On this dangerous interstate, 19 fatalities occurred in the summer months from 2015 to 2017. The next most deadly highways in New Hampshire were SR-101 and SR-16, which each had eight fatalities.

SR-101, which goes from Keene to the village district of Hampton Beach, is one of the most traveled east to west routes in New Hampshire. Known for its high number of fatal accidents, SR-101 has been referred to by locals as the “Highway of Death.” The frequent interchanges and traffic congestion make it particularly dangerous.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the most accurate analysis to use when comparing states, demographics, and other data sets is fatalities per mile driven. According to this metric, New Hampshire motorists rank relatively well. The state ranks No. 18 among states with the lowest fatality rate per 100 million miles driven. However, when evaluating it on a per-capita basis, New Hampshire does not fare as well. According to AutoInsurance.org, New Hampshire ranks No. 34 in road fatalities per 100,000 population (10.2 per 100,00 and 130 total fatal crashes).
